Obituary for Alexander J Pizzano Jr.

Alexander, “Al”, Joseph Pizzano, Jr. passed away peacefully on September 12th, 2020. He was 91 years old.

Alexander, lovingly known as “poppy” and “uncle Al”, is survived by his wife, Theresa Pizzano, his sisters, Jean Balestire and Anna Cosentino, his two children, Robert and his wife Kathryn, and Elisa and her husband, Christopher, as well as his grandchildren: Kasey Stecher and her husband Robert, Alexander Pizzano and his wife Brittany, Daniel Lepre, and Matthew Lepre. Alexander was a great grandfather to three grandsons and one granddaughter, Alexander Joseph (AJ), Benjamin Martin, Zachary Alexander, and Elizabeth (Ellie) Hope. Alexander has joined his grandson, Christopher John, sister, Etta, and brother, Anthony, in heaven.

Al was born on March 28th, 1929 in Brooklyn, New York. He was the youngest of five children born to Alexander Joseph Sr and Lena Pizzano. As a young man Alexander worked in the family business, Sterling Laundry, in Brooklyn, NY. Drafted into the army in 1951, Al served in the Armor branch of the US Army during the Korean War Conflict and was stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1953. Returning to Brooklyn, Al married Theresa "Terry" Franchi in 1955 and welcomed Robert Louis in 1958 and Elisa Angelina in 1962. Al, with his brother in law Joseph Cosentino, opened Sterling Foods Co. in Brooklyn. The grocery store operated for over thirty years. After owning the store, Al purchased a delivery route in which he provided food to schools in Staten Island. His family still reminisces about the delicious cookies and pretzel rods he had an endless supply of!! Upon retirement, Al and Terry left Brooklyn, ultimately settling in New Jersey.

Both Al and Terry enjoyed spending time with their family, especially their grandchildren. Al was known for his prowess in the kitchen and anyone who was lucky enough to share a meal with him will attest to his famous spinach pie! Always surrounded by family, Al enjoyed sharing his love of sports, Mets, Rangers and Jets, with his grandsons and extended family members. He could often be found most weekends on the sidelines of one of his grandsons’ sporting events. In addition to his grandchildren, Al was also blessed with many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and extended family members. He was a presence for them all. Al and Terry’s home was one that always welcomed everyone; their door was always open to celebrations and many a birthday, holiday and random Saturday was spent in their backyard and in their kitchen.

All who knew him describe him as “ a true gentleman” and “the kindest soul”. He will be remembered as always dressing sharply, smiling brightly, cracking jokes and enjoying the sheer beauty of being surrounded by family and friends. He never failed to let those in his life know just how much he loved them, and how proud he was of them all. He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday September 16th, 2020 between 4pm-6:30pm. A Mass will be held at Mary Mother of God Church in Hillsborough NJ at 10am on Thursday September 17th, 2020. Alexander will be laid to rest at Resurrection Cemetery in Piscataway Township, NJ.
