Obituary for Bernice A Pachuta

Bernice Ann Pachuta, loving and devoted wife, sister, mother, grandmother and aunt, passed away on July 21, 2019 at the age of 90. Bernice was born on August 20, 1928 in Mount Carmel, PA to Purina Cortellini and Bernard Jankowski.

A graduate of Mount Carmel High School in 1946, she went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Temple University in 1950. Well before it was common for women to do so, Bernice built a career as a scientist and researcher first at Curtis Publishing Co., then at Geisinger Hospital and Georgetown University Hospital. She met her husband, Michael in Mount Carmel at the town’s New Year’s Eve dance, a story that both never tired of telling. While choosing to dedicate herself to raising her daughter, Emily, Bernice still found time to lead the volunteer docents at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. for many years, enabling thousands of school-age children from around the country to learn about centuries of fine art. She had a very successful second career as a real estate agent for Weichert Realty. Bernice lived most of her life in Fairfax, Virginia and most recently with her daughter in Skillman, New Jersey.

Bernice had a deep appreciation for the arts, beginning with her training as a classical violinist as a child and continuing through her adult life with her love of art, ballet, classical music and theater. She loved animals, whether it was pets, the birds that she would feed or the injured chipmunk she rehabilitated and because a family pet. Bernice was also an avid reader, becoming so enthralled with her mystery or thriller, that she was known to stay up to all hours of the night just so she could “finish one more chapter.”

Bernice also loved traveling, touring Europe and traveling cross-country with her husband, Michael. The beach was her favorite destination. She spoke fondly of her college summers working at Kohrs Frozen Custard in Ocean Grove, NJ and spent many summer vacations with her family in Cape May, NJ.

Bernice’s generosity to her family was well-known and she loved them more than anything in the world. She is survived by her daughter, Emily Pachuta, her grandchildren, Lilly Derby and Matthew Derby, her brother, Bernard, her great-nieces Marylynne (Jankowski) Burns, Stephani (Schlanger) Lies and Lauren (Schlanger) Bleakney, her great-nephews Bernard Jankowski and Todd Schlanger and her friend, Frank Derby. She is predeceased by her beloved husband of over 60 years, Michael Pachuta, her sister, Dolores Ross and niece, Madeline Schlanger, both of whom she adored.

A viewing at 10:30 a.m. and funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. will be held on Saturday, July 27 at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Skillman, New Jersey, followed by burial at Rocky Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ASPCA.
