Obituary for Catherine B Carr

Catherine Best Carr, age 96, of Skillman, New Jersey, died of natural causes on Thursday, February 11, 2021 at Greenwood House for the Jewish Aged in Ewing, New Jersey.

Born November 16, 1924 in Detroit, Michigan, Catherine was raised on farms in Michigan, South Carolina, and New Jersey where her father managed, among others, prize Golden Guernsey cattle herds and her mother cooked for the ranch hands, managed a local Woolworth’s store, and occasionally played the piano to accompany silent movies at the theater. As a girl, she often split the night watch with her father, taking care of a sick calf or cow before heading to the kitchen - and the wood burning stove - to help her mother bake the morning’s bread and pies for the day. It was on the farm where Catherine developed her deep love for animals and her enjoyment for and talent at cooking and baking.

After finishing high school, Catherine attended Winthrop College in Rock Hill, South Carolina and graduated from their nursing program as a registered nurse, specializing in premature infants. She worked in Washington, D.C. and helped during a polio epidemic in Jackson, Mississippi before settling in at Mt. Sinai hospital for the majority of her career, where she ran the infants floor for four years before becoming head nurse and supervisor of the Premature Center. Catherine trained nurses and nurses’ aides for 11 Premature Centers throughout NYC, helping to raise the standards of care for these infants and lower the overall infant mortality rate in NYC. She continued her education through post-graduate work in Chicago and at Columbia University.

In 1953, she met Robert Carr while on vacation with a dear friend. Although Bob was living in Chicago at the time, a transfer with Western Electric brought him to New York City a few years later and after reconnecting, they were married on June 17, 1961 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Another transfer brought them to Albany where they started their family before future transfers to Syracuse and New Jersey. They enjoyed working around their home, exploring restaurants in NJ and PA, spending time in Maine with their family, and taking special trips together to Italy and Israel/Egypt. They loved, honored, and respected each other, both in sickness and in health.

Catherine is predeceased by her husband Robert. She is survived by her daughter Barbara, her son James, and her granddaughter Gillian.

Family and friends will remember Catherine’s creative talents in sewing, tole painting, and knitting. She enjoyed collecting cookbooks, and her gingersnap recipe will be passed down to many generations of friends and family bakers. She was an avid backyard birder/animal watcher and she enjoyed playing bridge. She enjoyed giving back to the community as a member of the Montgomery Women’s Club, especially their work with Crawford House.
Most of all, Catherine possessed a sense of adventure that was not limited by convention, a generosity to help others over herself, the strength and resilience to get through all of life’s challenges, an unflinching honesty to speak her truth, and the tenacity to live life on her own terms.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 17 th, at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 47 Skillman Road, Skillman, NJ. Visitation will be held in the St. Charles chapel beginning at 10:00 a.m. Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Burial Park and Mausoleum, Jamesburg, NJ.
