Obituary for Denise M Kubian

Denise Mary Kubian, (or “Denny”, as she was known in South River High School in the early 1950’s) grew up in Spotswood, New Jersey, the daughter of Robert and Grace Kelly. She was the middle child of three children: Robert, Carole, and herself.

Being a young person in a post-war, 1950’s America, Denise lived that new kind of middle class life that could be picturesque; cars, boats, shows, and the kind of clothes for which we now all go searching. Denise and her sister Carole wore their hair short and cute (Denise loved a Betty Boop style), wore capris and that type of striped shirt that screamed “we aren’t at war, so let’s go sailing.”

Denise loved music and loved to dance. Her favorites were Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, and Johnny Mathis. She was a Jazz Age kid, preferring the classics over anything too modern, although she did like some boogie-woogie. Denise was a classic, but she liked to have fun.

In the late 1950’s, Jane Kubian, of Perth Amboy, told her younger acquaintance, Denise, to whom she sometimes gave rides to work, that she had a guy for her; her brother, Raymond. Jane didn’t like the “barfly floozies” that musician Raymond was hanging out with and Denise agreed to meet him. They liked each other, and as was typical of the day, it didn’t take long before the two were married, on May 3rd, 1959.

Although Denise thought of herself as traditional, in many ways she did not fit the mold of the typical, early 1960’s housewife. She didn’t really like to cook. She screamed at the television when her beloved Yankees weren’t doing well. However, she did love to keep a beautiful home, and enjoyed collecting Asian-themed decorative art.

Denise and Raymond had a son, born December 23, 1971. As a family, they often traveled to Florida, sailed on the family boat, and loved perusing flea markets. Her husband Raymond had since stopped playing music as a career, but they both very much supported their son’s early musical inclinations by making sure the house was stocked with all sorts of used musical instruments.

Like many women of her generation, when she wasn’t raising a small child, Denise worked as a secretary. Her longest position would have been as an administrative assistant for Bristol Myers Squibb, which she had until she retired. While at BMS, and along with her good friend Maxine, she enjoyed many outings, especially ones that brought her to Broadway shows. She sat in the middle front row for Alan Cumming’s Emcee in Cabaret, and even had a moment with him when he attempted to shock her. However, Denise was not so easily shocked. After all, she was a Red Hatter who enjoyed dressing up in the, often ostentatious, purple and red outfits, along with her cousin Arline.

Like many women who lived the days between traditional roles and “liberation”, Denise was obliged to forge a path that made sense for her. Sometimes she did “what was expected” and that was fine; other times she did what she really wanted, and that was fine, too. Denise lived a happy life. She made sacrifices, but they were the kinds of sacrifices with which she could live peacefully, in the rural Central New Jersey home she built with her husband.

Denise Mary Kubian is survived by her son Raymond S Kubian. Her husband, Raymond E Kubian, passed last year, after a long life. If you close your eyes, it is easy to picture them, right now, on their boat, laughing and living that kind of dream-like American life for which they worked very hard. They were part of the generation who knew the value of things, and so, truly enjoyed those moments of rest and recreation. Denise’s family wishes Denise the rest and recreation of her choosing now.
