Obituary for Donald J Mahler

Donald James Mahler, 98, of Belle Mead NJ passed away on Sunday August 18 after a long illness, peacefully at home surrounded by his family.

Donald grew up in Jersey City during the Great Depression, in a loving family of eight children. Along with many members of the greatest generation, he enlisted in the army during WWII after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He served in Army Intelligence breaking military codes, stationed in Australia. After the war he attended Pace University, began a career in the early days of computers, and met the love of his life, Olga Magré.

Donald, Olga and their 4 young children moved to Carteret, NJ and there they built a life. He enriched their lives with travel, gathering them all into the family car for long road trips of varying success. In later years, Don and Olga travelled the world, including trips to Europe, Chile, and even China. After retiring, they moved to Belle Mead, where he continued to enjoy his passion for photography, classical music, and rooting for Notre Dame.
Donald was an active parishioner at St Charles Borromeo in Skillman NJ. He sang in the church choir and volunteered at the soup kitchen, always expressing the importance of living his faith in actions and deeds.

Donald is pre-deceased by his parents, Arthur and Grace (nee McGlynn), his brothers, Arthur, Jack, Robert and Raymond, and his sisters, Edna Medico and Grace Budd.
Donald is survived by his loving wife of nearly 66 years, Olga Mahler, his children and their spouses, Deborah and Robert Walsh of Belle Mead, NJ, Patricia and Anthony D’Aguillo of Bradenton, FL , Donald and Anna Mahler of Hillsborough, NJ, and Carol and Richard Hamersky of Hillsborough, NJ, his grandchildren Eileen, Christine, Amy, Michelle, Robert, Kerri, Michael, Matthew, Christopher and Carolyn and his great grandson, Connor James. Donald is also survived by his sister Eileen Leniart of Carteret, NJ.
