Obituary for Dr. Nicholas J Hrib

Nicholas J Hrib passed away on Friday, October 30, 2020 at the age of 67.

Nick was born in Philadelphia on August 12, 1953. He was the only child of Nicholas and Eleanor Hrib, and grew up in Warminster, PA. Nick had health challenges throughout his childhood. Despite these, he graduated from Archbishop Wood High School in 1971 at the top of his class.

After graduation, Nick attended Princeton University, where he majored in Chemistry. He first met his wife, Penny, during his senior year. He was also a member of Campus Club. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BA in Chemistry in 1976.
Nick continued to pursue a career in Chemistry, graduating from UCLA with a PhD in Organic Chemistry with Robert V. Stevens. He subsequently worked with Amos Smith at the University of Pennsylvania as a Post-doctoral Fellow.

Nick joined American Hoechst (now Sanofi) as a Research Chemist in 1984 doing pharmaceutical research and drug discovery. He was a Research Project Leader for several early stage drug candidates. In 2000, Nick changed his career path, using his scientific knowledge and experience in the area of Scientific Competitive Intelligence, analyzing internal and external drug candidates. He continued in that role until he retired in 2016.
Nick and Penny were married in 1987 and shared 33 years of happiness together. Nick loved to travel, spend time with friends and family, and was an avid gardener. He especially fell in love with the island of Kauai and visited there often. Nick was known for his clever sense of humor and his kindness and generosity to all. He was a loyal friend and a valued colleague whose passing leaves a void in the lives of everyone he touched.
Nick is survived by his wife, Penny and his aunt, Mary Higgins.
