Obituary for Edith Marilyn Searle

E. Marilyn Searle, age 84, of Bedminster, and formerly of South Orange. NJ, passed away on November 26, 2018, from complications of Parkinson's Disease. She was married to Edwin Searle; mother of Barbara Searle of Hillsborough NJ; Beverly (Tom) Strauss of Lincoln University, PA; and the late Nancy Searle; and grandmother of Sean Searle, James and Marilyn O'Brien, and Robert and Timothy Strauss. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Born in Atlantic City and a resident of Wyomissing, PA, she was the daughter of the late "Pete" and Edith Smallwood, and survived her brother Henry Erben and sister Nancy Davis. At Wyomissing High School she was an outstanding student, cheer leader, and a strong swimmer on the women's swim team. Each summer she supported herself by making salt water taffy at the Copper Kettle Fudge Shop in Ocean City, NJ. She attended Chatham College where she was elected class president and studied political science with plans to serve internationally in the foreign service - until she married Ed. Marilyn enjoyed being involved with her daughters' horseback riding adventures. One could usually find her holding the horses during a break or standing ringside cheering her girls on. She helped her husband build their Bedminster home as well. After raising her children, she worked for Richland-Knowles Insurance Agency in Summit, NJ, where she was affectionately known as the "Queen Mother." Many were attracted by Marilyn's warm and engaging personality and each year she looked forward to vacationing with the friends, family, sand and sea that she loved so much in Stone Harbor, NJ.

A memorial service, followed by a reception, will be held on Saturday December 8th at 12:30PM at Lamington Presbyterian Church, 355 Lamington Road, Bedminster, NJ 07921.

In recognition of her love for animals, in lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be sent to MidAtlantic Horse Rescue, PO Box 407, Chesapeake City, MD 21915 or online to
