Obituary for John D Hughes

A much loved father, grandfather, brother, and uncle John D. Hughes of Somerset, NJ (and for a long time a resident of Mahwah, NJ) passed away on Wednesday December 11, 2019 at the age of 84 years old. After months of failing health, he died peacefully, surrounded by family.

John was born on May 3, 1935 in Kearney, NJ to Margaret Watt and John Hughes. He was raised in Kearney along with his brother Tommy and his sisters Margaret and Carol. In 1955 he joined the army and served honorably for 4 years. After the army, John studied at Rutgers University School of Business Administration, and received a Bachelor degree in 1960.
John married the love of his life, Eileen Zelder, in 1962 and they had 2 children, Mark and Beth. John and Eileen started their family in Irvington and Scotch Plains, NJ, but in 1971 moved to Middlesex, NJ where they remained until after Eileen’s death in 1988.
John finished his long working career at UPS while living in Mahwah, NJ. He retired in 1990 and enjoyed many years being active with family and friends and traveling around the world. Especially dear to him was an annual long winter vacation in Sanibel, Florida. John would drive from New Jersey to Florida, taking time to visit along the way. Then, once in Sanibel, a long list of family and friends would take turns sharing the vacation with him.
John had special groups of people in his life. There was the group of guys he met as a young man when he worked at Camp Kiamesha in Newark, NJ, and a group from his college fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi. These were among several of his life-long friends, who remained in touch over the years and gathered regularly to catch-up and reminisce. There was also The Magnificent Seven, a social group that included Tommy and Margaret, their spouses, and a few cousins. Their regular outings together required wearing a signature tee-shirt.
The center of his life was always family: his children and their families, his brother and sisters, and the branches of the family tree that connect them all. John kept close to all the family, he shared his love and exuberance for life with everyone.

John is survived by his son Mark, his wife Joanne, and their children Evan and Maggie; his daughter Beth, her husband David, and their children Lauren, Lindsey, and Jack; and by his sisters Margaret and Carol.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2020 at 11:00 am at the First Presbyterian Church of Cranbury in Cranbury, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s memory to The Bergen Family Center where John served on the Board of Directors during much of his early retirement. Please send donations to: The Bergen Family Center, 44 Armory Street, Englewood, NJ 07631, attention Mitch Schonfeld.
