Obituary for Mary Wallen

Mary Wallen, (nee McNulty) was born on October 31, 1931 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland to parents Manus McNulty and Mary (nee McBride) of Donegal, Ireland. Mary was the youngest of 8 and sister to, Manus, Jimmy, Ann, Norah, Sadie, Patrick and Andrew.
Mary set sail to the US in 1953 on the Queen Mary and arrived at Ellis Island, seeking new opportunities. She worked as domestic help on a ranch in Sheridan, Wyoming for one year to attain citizenship. She then moved to Brooklyn, NY with a letter of introduction to the head of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in 1954. She was immediately hired there as a secretary, the beginning of her illustrious career on Wall St.

Mary met her husband Harry (Buddy) Wallen on a New Year’s Eve blind date in 1954. They were married at Our Lady of Victory Chapel in lower Manhattan in April, 1956 and settled in Flatbush, Brooklyn, New York. Mary raised 4 kids and returned to Wall St in the summer of 1965. She lost her husband in June 1973 and was given the opportunity to move from secretarial support to become a broker at Lehman Brothers in order to support her family. Mary passed her Series 7 Exam in 1976 and became the first female broker at Lehman in 1977, paving the way for many more women to follow. She was promoted to SVP and recognized as a Top Producer, Chairman’s Club member for the remainder of her career. She was a woman well ahead of her times. She retired in 1991 and worked as a patient relations volunteer at Overlook Memorial Hospital.

Mary’s journey in the US took her from residence in Brooklyn, NY to Short Hills NJ, then Berkeley Heights and Watchung, NJ. She moved into the Chelsea at Warren and finally to Bryan Manor Nursing Home in Chester, NJ.

Mary was a woman of grace, with a great sense of humor and warm and generous heart. Her family and friends meant everything to her and she gave of herself endlessly. No matter how big the life’s challenges, she was determined to make the best of it, and always with a smile on her face. (Along with her lipstick, of course…).

Mary was a remarkable woman, a wonderful Daughter, Sister, Aunt, Cousin and a great friend to many. She was the best Mom in the world and a very special Grandma. She is survived by her children: Harry Wallen (and Christine), Mary Ann Glynn (and Mickey), Andrew Wallen (and Joyce), and Jimmy Wallen (and Michelle); and grandchildren Mary C, Matthew, Emily and James. Mary had a long life that was well lived!
