Obituary for Norma T O'Donnell

Norma Theresa O’Donnell, 92, of Hillsborough, a devoted wife, mother, sister and grandmother died Wednesday at home.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, she was the youngest of five girls. Her mother died when she was very young, and she was raised by her father Frank Howard and oldest sister Margie. There have been many beautiful stories told of the singing and dancing, the player piano in the parlor, papa on the mandolin, sister Mary singing, and little Norma dancing on the dining room table.

Norma married Joseph Patrick O’Donnell in 1957 and together with their two children, settled in Staten Island in 1965. She lived there for the next 52 years. She was a parishioner of Our Lady Star of the Sea Church where in 2007 she and Joseph renewed their wedding vows on their 50th wedding anniversary. She was a former parishioner of St. Joseph - St. Thomas Church. Her husband Joseph passed away eight years ago.

Norma moved to Hillsborough, NJ in 2017 to live with her daughter and son-in-law. She was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church in Millstone Borough.

She worked for AT&T as a telephone operator for about 13 years, retiring in 1958 to take care of her new family.

Norma was all about family, and took pleasure in the simple things in life. She was a great bowler winning many trophies with the Golden Oldies Bowling League in Staten Island of which she was a member for more than 25 years. She was a recent member of the SAGES Senior Ministry at St. Joseph Church. She will be remembered most for being the greatest of all listeners and for her care and love of others.

Surviving are her daughters, Tracey Buggy and Joanne Mitchell; her son-in-laws, Richard Buggy and Paul Mitchell; her grandchildren, Joseph, Brian, Erin and Kristin; Erin’s husband Joey and Brian’s fiancé Ana; and her sister, Mary Howard.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am on Saturday, August 17th, in the St. Joseph’s Church, 34 Yorktown Rd., Hillsborough NJ, 08844. Visiting for relatives and friends will be from 2 – 4pm & 7 – 9pm on Friday, August 16th, in the Hillsborough Funeral Home, 796 Us Hwy 206, Hillsborough, NJ 08844.
