Obituary for Angelina Bittman

Angelina (“Angie”) Bittman, 94, passed away peacefully Saturday evening, January 6, 2018, in Hillsborough, NJ. Born in Moonachie, New Jersey, on January 3, 1924, she was the second eldest of seven children born to Vincenzo Bassani and Mary (Nerone).

Angie’s life was filled with variety. She worked as a lathe operator during World War II, and after she married and moved to Rockaway, worked first as an assistant nursery school teacher while her three children were young, and then as a clerk in the disbursing department at Picatinny Arsenal in Wharton. She retired from Picatinny in 1996, and enjoyed her retirement years.

Angie was the embodiment of the idea that ‘age is just a number’ and always did what she wanted, living life the way she enjoyed. A high school graduate, she proudly talked about her 3 college credits from a Psychology class (in which she earned an A) she had to take for her job at Picatinny. At the age of 90, she leased a new car when the old car was rusting out, and from the time she retired until just recently, would have weekly lunch dates with at least one of her siblings. She was a loving and caring woman with a good sense of humor and a strong sense of family. She enjoyed adventures and loved going ‘along for the ride’ whether it was to a local store, to a casino, or on a road trip across several states. She loved taking trips to California to spend time with her family, and in her 80s, she traveled to Italy to see her father’s birthplace and even flew to Chicago to attend a concert with her sister. Just last August, at the age of 93, she traveled to Bermuda for a few days of fun with friends and family. Simpler things also brought her great pleasure… she enjoyed gardening and cooking, and loved playing her grandchildren in her favorite game, Rummikub, at the dining room table as well as playing Words with Friends on her phone. She was also a very prayerful woman, and lived her Catholic faith with passion. Whether through cooking, playing games, or recounting stories of her past, every moment of her life was spent nourishing and connecting with those around her. Angie truly set a great example for her family about how to live and enjoy life; she will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Predeceased by her husband Carl in 1996 and by her brothers Joseph, Dominic and Vincent, Angie is survived by her loving children: Barbara Horr of Flagtown, NJ, Andrew (Sharon) Bittman of Chester, NJ, and Carl (Rosie) Bittman of Redondo Beach, CA, as well as her nine grandchildren, whom she adored and loved: Nicole (Matthew) Canning, Angela Horr, Danielle Horr, Christopher Horr, Samantha Bittman, Riley Bittman, Keith Bittman, Kyle Bittman, and Karl Bittman. She is also survived by siblings Margaret Riggs of Fullerton, CA, Mary Lou Brigley of Pompton Plains, NJ, and John (Cecelia) Bassani of Manchester, NJ, as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Visiting for relatives and friends will be held from 4 – 8 pm on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at the Hillsborough Funeral Home, 796 Us Hwy 206, Hillsborough, NJ 08844. A funeral service will be at 10am on Friday, January 12, 2018, at Mary Mother of God Church, 157 S. Triangle Rd., Hillsborough, New Jersey 08844. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Chester, NJ.

The family invites all visitors to wear something with the color pink; it was Angie’s favorite color.
