Obituary for James X Paterno

James X. Paterno, 84, of Belle Mead, NJ entered into eternal rest on August 4, 2019.
Jim was a dedicated educator beginning as a teacher of mathematics in 1955. He remained a teacher for many years at various school districts and moved onto School Administration for the next twenty plus years of his career. He formally retired from education in early 1990, from the Metuchen School district. His passion for mathematics and teaching continued after retirement and he returned to the classroom to teach college mathematics as a professor for Middlesex County College until 2000.His career as a teacher also lead him to the love of his life, Barbara, who was also a teacher at Linden High School. They married in April 1961. They moved to Belle Mead, NJ in 1970 where they raised their four children.

James was an Eagle Scout and Assistant Scout Master in the Boy Scouts of America. He also served as a coach for many of his children’s sports teams.
He was an active member of St. Joseph’s Parish in Hillsborough, NJ volunteering for the Finance Council, a member of the St. Joseph’s Sages and active in the Montgomery Township Senior Citizens. James was also a former Bound Brook Councilman, member of the Montgomery Township Board of Education, Phi Delta Kappa member, Doctoral Scholar, and a Diplomate of Education.

Jim was a Lionel Train enthusiast, puzzle maker, and known for being able to “fix” anything with a variety of items found around the house. He was known for his incredible sense of humor, kindness, generosity, and a variety of musical talents including singing, trumpet and piano.

He will be missed by his loving wife Barbara, of 58 years and his brother, Charles. Children Barbara Spada and husband Perry, Jim Paterno and wife Renee, Matthew Paterno and wife Christine, and Judith Paterno-Skolnick and husband Josh. He is grandfather to 10 grandchildren: Holly, Caroline, Steven, Robyn, Rebecca, Shannon, Stephanie, Anthony, Allison and Juliana and Great Grandfather to William and Hazel.
